UTIL
Utility is the defining ethical quality of good in Utilitarian philosophy. That good is measured in utils, an imaginary currency that allows society to quantitatively prioritize the most beneficial outcomes.
Within crypto culture, it is the property that fungible tokens need to avoid being classified as merely securities. Soi-disant “investors” also demand it of PFP projects, identifying them as insufficient to the extent that they are simply art.
INU
Inutility is a theory that defines art, contrary to demands for NFT token utility, by its lack of use value. Abbreviated to a ticker symbol to make a token name, it becomes INU, like " shiba inu", the “doge” of internet meme imaginaries.
Art has its uses but not use value; it only has exchange value. Inutility is not merely the absence of that use value, of utility. It is dead utility, sacrificed and locked into a useless form. If it were possible to quantify it, this relationship would have to hold in some way as part of that quantification.
AURA
Aura is the property of art that Walter Benjamin found lacking in mechanically reproduced ar—allographic rather than autographic art in Nelson Goodman’s typology. Lack of aura is a kind of alienation or instrumentalization. It renders aesthetics frictionless and more easily exploitable by fascism.
More recently, it has become an ineffable positive quality of individuals’ social media performance equivalent to the “cool” or “rizz” of previous generations. It is generative as a namespace collision for understanding the novelty of the present in terms of the application and extension of existing theory.
UTIL/INU/AURA
Tokenomics allows us to model and experience theoretical ideas as actually existing systems. UTIL/INU/AURA makes the relationship between utility, aura, and art, real on the blockchain.
